Abstract:
This baseline survey assessed the socio economic status of vulnerable youth, women, and children in Bahir Dar and Gondar city administrations, with the aim of identifying key needs, challenges, and establishing indicators for future impact assessment. A mixed methods design was employed, combining quantitative household surveys of 160 beneficiaries with qualitative interviews and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 26.0, while qualitative data were subjected to thematic content analysis. Findings revealed that most respondents live in medium sized households and face significant socio economic vulnerabilities. Education was widely recognized as a driver of socio economic improvement, yet access to quality schooling and training remains limited due to financial barriers. Economic empowerment opportunities, particularly vocational training, were valued, but respondents reported restricted access to financial resources and limited institutional support. Health and well-being outcomes highlighted moderate access to healthcare but poor mental health support and safety conditions. Social inclusion and protection emerged as the weakest domain, with respondents reporting exclusion, discrimination, and inadequate social programs. Correlation analysis confirmed that education, empowerment, health, and inclusion are mutually reinforcing, while one sample tests validated the statistical significance of all domains. Overall, the study underscores the urgent need for integrated, multi sectoral interventions that strengthen education, economic empowerment, health services, and social protection to foster sustainable socio economic development for vulnerable populations in Ethiopia.
