Abstract:
Project success is increasingly recognized as a multidimensional construct that extends beyond traditional measures of cost, time, and scope. This journal, Defining Success: Perspectives on Project Definition and Performance Metrics, explores the critical relationship between how projects are defined and how their performance is measured. Drawing on diverse perspectives-strategic, operational, stakeholder, and cultural-the study highlights the importance of clear, inclusive, and adaptive project definitions as the foundation for success. It examines the evolution of performance metrics from the "iron triangle" to modern frameworks that incorporate quality, sustainability, innovation, and stakeholder satisfaction. The balanced scorecard approach and Agile methodologies are analyzed as integrative tools that reconcile efficiency with effectiveness. Case studies demonstrate how strong definitions align with meaningful metrics, while failures reveal the risks of ambiguity and misalignment. Looking forward, the journal emphasizes future directions shaped by digital transformation, sustainability imperatives, and global perspectives. By linking definition to performance, this work advocates for a holistic view of project success that balances efficiency, responsibility, and resilience, ensuring projects deliver value to organizations, stakeholders, and society.
