Abstract:
: The study examined sustainable poultry production strategies adopted by farmers for achieving food security in Delta State, Nigeria. It was guided by three research questions and three null hypotheses. A descriptive survey design was adopted, targeting a population of 415 registered poultry farmers in the state. Using the Z-score formula, a sample of 200 farmers was selected. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, which was validated by experts, and its reliability was confirmed with a Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC) which gave a reliability coefficient of 0.83. Of the 200 questionnaires distributed, 178 were correctly completed and analyzed using t-test and ANOVA at the 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed that: (i) Poultry farmers in Delta State adopt a range of deliberate and sustainable strategies aimed at improving poultry production and enhancing food security. (ii) Poultry farmers employ effective housing management strategies that emphasize adequate ventilation, temperature control, hygiene, and biosecurity to improve productivity. (iii) Based on these findings, the study recommended, among others, that poultry farmers in Delta State should sustain and further improve the adoption of effective housing management practices, particularly in the areas of ventilation, temperature regulation, hygiene, and biosecurity, to enhance bird health and productivity.
