Abstract:
The study examined examination processes and quality assurance mechanisms in Delta State polytechnics and colleges of education. It was guided by four research questions and four hypotheses, employing a correlational research method based on an ex-post facto design. The population comprised 738 academic staff, including 366 from polytechnics and 372 from colleges of education in Delta State. A sample of 369 academic staff, representing 50% of the population, was selected. Two self-developed questionnaires were used for data collection: the Examination Processes Questionnaire (EPQ) and the Quality Assurance Mechanisms Questionnaire (QAMQ). The instruments were validated through face and content validity by experts. Reliability was established using Cronbach's Alpha via SPSS, yielding coefficients of 0.75 for EPQ and 0.70 for QAMQ, which were considered acceptable. Research questions were answered using the coefficient of determination, while hypotheses were tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation at the 0.05 level of significance. Data were presented in tables. Findings revealed that examination processes in Delta State polytechnics and colleges of education typically include examination preparation, scheduling, administration, result preparation and moderation, result dissemination, and performance feedback. It was also found that established quality assurance mechanisms exist in both institutions, with no significant differences in responses between them. Based on these findings, it was recommended that examination processes as quality assurance mechanisms should be consistently implemented. Additionally, effective examination scheduling, proper management, adequate resource allocation, time management, and the avoidance of conflicts during examinations should be maintained to ensure quality assurance.
