Abstract:
This study explores the potentials for sustainable tourism development in Bayelsa State, Nigeria, with a specific focus on the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Yenagoa, Southern Ijaw, Brass, and Ekeremor. Employing a mixed-methods research design, data was collected from 340 respondents via questionnaires, interviews, and direct observation. The findings reveal significant, yet underutilized, tourism potentials, primarily centered on natural assets like the Akassa Sea and River Nun, a rich indigenous culture and customs, and historical pilgrimage sites. However, the development of these assets is critically constrained by major challenges, including poor infrastructural development specifically inadequate road access and transportation-unreliable power supply, and a lack of initiative from both government and private investors. The study concludes that harnessing these tourism potentials for sustainable development requires a strategic, multi-stakeholder approach. Key recommendations include prioritizing infrastructural development, ensuring active government involvement and policy formulation, creating incentives to attract private sector investment, and actively promoting cultural heritage and community participation. This research underscores tourism as a viable pathway for diversifying the state's economy away from oil dependency, fostering socio-economic growth, and reshaping the regional image.
