Abstract:
This study examined the influence of organisational structure on teacher productivity in public secondary schools in Lagos State. Specifically, the research investigated how components of organisational structure such as communication flow, involvement in decision-making, and principal-teacher relationships influence teachers' productivity in performing core responsibilities. Using a descriptive survey design, the population for the study made up of 10,059 senior secondary school teachers and 317 principals in public senior secondary schools in Lagos State. The sample size for this study is 1,013 (920 teachers and 93 principals) respondents selected from public secondary schools in Lagos State. The study adopted the Multistage sampling procedure to select the sample size. The instruments that were used for this study are two; self-structured questionnaires, Organisational Structure Questionnaire (OSQ) and Teacher productivity Questionnaire (TPQ) with reliability of 0,82 and 0.76 respectively. Findings revealed that teachers in Lagos State are generally fairly productive, particularly in areas of classroom teaching and class control. However, productivity was found to be low in lesson note preparation, indicating a gap in instructional planning. The study also established that organisational structures in the schools were relatively effective, with positive perceptions of communication channels, inclusive decision-making, and professional relationships between principals and teachers. Overall, the results showed that organisational structure has a significant influence on teacher productivity. The study recommends strengthening administrative frameworks and ensuring active teacher involvement in school governance to enhance productivity and instructional delivery in public secondary schools.
