Abstract:
Nigeria's youth demographics present a critical juncture for national productivity, with over a third of the population under 24 years old. This demographic advantage offers significant potential for economic growth, but systemic challenges like high unemployment, skills gaps, and over-reliance on traditional white-collar jobs undermine this potential. Integrating effective career counselling and vocational guidance is essential to transform youth energy into tangible national output. This paper examines the role of career counselling in enhancing national productivity in Nigeria. It investigates the existing career counselling services, infrastructure, and policies, and identifies gaps and challenges. The study also explores the effects of career counselling on Nigerian youth, including employability, career satisfaction, and productivity. The paper utilises a qualitative methodology, synthesising secondary data from peer-reviewed journals, federal policy frameworks, and authoritative grey literature. The analysis reveals that career counselling is crucial for aligning education with economic needs, empowering young individuals to contribute effectively to national development. The paper recommends institutionalising a National Skills Council, integrating digital career infrastructure, incentivising employer-led training, and mandating entrepreneurial psychological support to enhance career counselling services in Nigeria.
