Abstract:
High-quality teacher-student relationships (TSRs) are crucial for academic success, fostering socio-emotional development, and motivation. TSRs characterized by warmth, trust, and low conflict enhance students' communication skills, motivation, and academic performance. This study examines the influence of TSRs on student engagement, motivation, and academic outcomes, highlighting the role of TSRs in fostering student motivation and self-efficacy. Attachment Theory and Self-Determination Theory provide frameworks for understanding TSRs and their impact on students. Attachment Theory emphasizes the importance of secure relationships, while Self-Determination Theory highlights the need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. A systematic literature review was conducted to explore the influence of TSRs on student engagement, motivation, and academic outcomes. Positive TSRs are associated with improved academic performance, increased student engagement, and enhanced social-emotional skills. Negative relationships can lead to disengagement and poor academic outcomes. TSRs influence cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement, with emotional intelligence playing a significant role. TSRs are fundamental to academic success. Policymakers should prioritize initiatives promoting supportive, student-centered learning environments, such as teacher training programs and emotional intelligence integration. Teachers should focus on building positive relationships, fostering autonomy, and creating inclusive learning environments.
