Abstract:
Jalingo Metropolis, the capital of Taraba State, represents a rapidly urbanizing environment where traditional norms co-exist with modern influences. The city draws diverse populations from across ethnic and religious lines, yet mental health remains a low-priority issue in public discourse and local policy. The scarcity of mental health specialists in Taraba State reportedly fewer than five certified clinical psychologists for a population exceeding 3 million exacerbates the crisis. Existing mental health services are often folded into general medical units with little to no specialization. Moreover, widespread beliefs in spiritual causation and social contagion lead to practices of isolation, secrecy, and discrimination against those perceived to be mentally ill. Data were generated through primary and secondary method of data collection. This study employed a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. A total of 450 respondents participated in the survey. The results confirm a persistent gap in mental health literacy and a high prevalence of stigma, especially related to supernatural attributions and social exclusion.
