Abstract:
This study examined the relationship between sustainable leadership and community engagement in primary schools in Kyela District, Tanzania. The purpose was to explore how leadership practices influenced parental and community involvement in school activities, decision-making, and resource mobilization, with a view to improving educational outcomes and fostering long-term school sustainability. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving 86 participants, including head teachers, teachers, and school committee members. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires, while qualitative data were gathered using semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document reviews. Findings revealed that sustainable leadership significantly shaped community engagement. Head teachers who demonstrated participatory leadership, trust-building, inclusive decision-making, and collaboration achieved higher levels of parental involvement, PTA participation, and teacher-community cooperation. However, some schools experienced moderate to low engagement due to socio-economic constraints, logistical challenges, and occasional gaps in leadership communication. The study was limited by its focus on a single district, which may affect generalizability, and by the relatively small sample size. Practically, the study showed the importance of structured leadership practices, regular communication, and inclusive platforms to foster community participation and shared responsibility in school development. Socially, it emphasized the value of trust, collaboration, and capacity-building in strengthening school-community partnerships. In conclusion, sustainable leadership positively influenced community engagement, enhancing educational outcomes and fostering long-term school sustainability. The study recommended that school leaders continue to adopt participatory and inclusive approaches, implement effective communication strategies, and engage parents and communities actively to ensure consistent support and collaboration in achieving educational goals.
