Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of cloud accounting adoption on the financial performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. SMEs contribute significantly to employment generation and economic development, yet many face challenges related to financial management, operational inefficiencies, and limited access to real-time financial information. Cloud accounting has emerged as an innovative technological solution capable of improving financial management through automation, remote accessibility, and enhanced data processing capabilities. This study adopted a survey research design using primary data collected through structured questionnaires administered to staff of SMEs operating in Asaba, Delta State, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 552 SMEs registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and operating within the study area. Using Yamane's sampling technique and purposive sampling, 40 respondents from eight SMEs that had adopted cloud accounting systems were selected for analysis. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient and simple linear regression to examine the relationship between cloud accounting and financial performance indicators proxied by cash flow management, profitability, cost effectiveness, efficiency, and financial sustainability. The findings reveal that cloud accounting significantly improves cash flow monitoring, profitability, and efficiency among SMEs. The results further show that cloud accounting has a positive but relatively weaker relationship with cost effectiveness, while its impact on long-term financial sustainability was negative. The study concludes that cloud accounting plays a critical role in improving financial management and overall performance of SMEs in Nigeria. It recommends that SME owners adopt cloud-based accounting solutions and that policymakers support digital accounting adoption through training programs, incentives, and infrastructure development. These measures will enhance financial performance, and efficiency within Nigeria's SME sector.
