Abstract:
As AI tools increasingly pervade the educational landscape, they have reshaped the way students learn and study, research, write, and problem solve. This study aims at investigating the dependence on the use of AI tools in relation to academic work of the students enrolled at the University of Rajshahi. A mixed method approach to combining quantitative and qualitative was used. The study survey was administered to 150 undergraduate students to gather data on the patterns and dependence on AI, benefits of using AI, and challenges encountered. The results show that a majority of the students regularly use AI tools for their homework, academic writing, research and information gathering. AI improves learning efficiency, academic outcomes, engagement, and access to learning resources, students reported. Despite the advantages of using AI in education, the study also highlights concerns about overreliance on AI, such as a diminished sense of creativity, critical thinking, and superficial learning, as well as the potential for academic dishonesty. However, students have a generally favorable perception of the use of AI in the field of education. The study underscores the need for the ethical and balanced use of AI in higher education institutions.
