Abstract:
This research presents a comparative study on the wear and thermal properties of sustainable automobile brake pads fabricated using cow hoof and Indian bamboo fibres as fillers. The fillers were processed, combined with phenolic resin, and reinforced with additives before being compression-moulded into standard brake pad specimens. Wear behaviour was evaluated using a pin-on-disc apparatus under varying loads and speeds, while thermal conductivity and stability were measured according to ASTM standards. Results showed that cow hoof-based composites exhibited lower wear rates and superior thermal resistance, while bamboo-based composites demonstrated better energy dissipation but higher wear tendency. The findings highlight the potential of combining cow hoof and bamboo fibres to optimize tribological and thermal performance for eco-friendly brake pad production.
