Abstract:
The study investigates the impact of welding current on the mechanical properties of Shielded Metal Arc Welded (SMAW) joints applied in palm oil digester bracket assemblies. E6013 electrodes were used to apply six levels of current (40A, 60A, 80A, 100A, 120A and 140A) on mild steel plates. The mechanical characteristics measured are flexural strength, peak bending force, weld bead width, and crack width. Findings show that the moderate currents of 80A-100A are the most effective in achieving the best balance of mechanical performance. Flexural strength is the highest at 2036.22 MPa at 140A, and bending force is the highest at 1010 N at 80A. The maximum heat input of 120A resulted in coarsening of grains and maximum crack width (0.957 mm), whereas 80A recorded zero crack width, which indicated a defect-free welding. The results provide a factual guideline for selecting the optimal welding parameters to increase the reliability and durability of components in palm oil processing machinery.
