Abstract:
Students' career aspirations are a key factor in shaping their educational and occupational futures, especially in developing countries, where competition for jobs is high. This research aims to identify students' career aspirations and obstacles in the University of Rajshahi and their influence on the socio-economic background, family expectations, academic context, and institutional support. The study employed a mixed-method approach, which involved the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were collected using structured questionnaires and the qualitative data were collected by empirical analysis from 250 University students. The results indicate that the students have a clear idea regarding their future career goals and the most desired career is a government job due to social prestige and job security. The study also highlights the significant challenges in career development, such as financial considerations, poor career guidance, lack of skill development opportunities, and psychological pressures. Moreover, the findings show that the socio-economic factors and institutional inadequacies have a significant impact on the career preparation of students and their decision-making process. Therefore, the study suggests a greater support in career counseling, development of practical skills, and an institutional support system to prepare students for competitive labor markets and sustainable career development.
