Abstract:
The rapid evolution of smart retail technologies has intensified the need for efficient, automated, and customer-oriented shopping solutions. Conventional supermarket checkout systems are commonly characterized by long queues, manual barcode scanning, billing inaccuracies, and delayed inventory updates, all of which negatively affect customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. This review paper critically examines existing research on Smart Shopping Trolley systems with automated billing capabilities, focusing on the integration of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Internet of Things (IoT), embedded systems, and mobile/web platforms. Through a systematic review of prior studies and experimental implementations, the paper identifies key challenges, including system fragmentation, scalability limitations, infrastructure cost, fraud prevention, and user acceptance. Although enabling technologies such as RFID-based item detection and IoT-enabled communication are technologically mature, their practical application remains largely confined to prototype-level deployments. In response to these gaps, this paper proposes a unified conceptual framework for an integrated Smart Shopping Trolley with Automated Billing System that supports real-time item identification, continuous bill computation, inventory synchronization, and seamless digital payment. The paper concludes with recommendations aimed at guiding future research and facilitating large-scale adoption of smart retail automation.
