Abstract:
This study used a qualitative approach, specifically a hermeneutic phenomenological design, to understand how school paper advisers and student journalists in selected secondary schools in Bulacan make sense of their lived experiences under Republic Act 7079. Guided by Van Manen's framework, it focused on uncovering deeper meanings in their stories, particularly in terms of press freedom, institutional support, ethics, and their roles in campus journalism. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus-group discussion from five school paper advisers and five student journalists across selected schools. The findings show that campus journalism is more than just writing. It is a meaningful and transformative experience shaped by continuous learning, ethical responsibility, and limited freedom within school systems. Advisers act as mentors and guides, balancing teaching, protection, and ethical leadership, while student journalists grow through hands-on experience and perseverance despite challenges. The study also found that strong institutional support is essential, as lack of resources, funding, and proper policy implementation can hinder journalistic practice. Overall, campus journalism is a dynamic process that develops skills and values, but it requires stronger support and proper implementation of RA 7079 to fully achieve its purpose.
