Abstract:
Climate change and poverty has been an age long problem that has eaten deep into the fabric of Nigeria. In this work we looked into major hypothesis like how poverty has brought about corruption through bad governance and climate change has been blamed upon human activities which result in increase release of green house gases and wide spread of deforestation both of which alter the balance of atmospheric gases in favor of the green houses. These impacts are as a result of devastating effects of flooding, drought, erosion, sea level rise, heat stress, pest and diseases etc. which are all due to climate change. This work argued that in spite of Nigeria's rich human and abundant mineral resources (particularly oil), a distortional highly number of its population live in abject poverty with over 50 percent of the wealth concentrated in less than 10 percent of the total population. We also looked into the objectives of the study, to identify whether deforestation, industrial release, in proper sewage disposals and some of the major factors that are responsible for climate change in Nigeria and to show the extent to which poverty has obstructed democracy, the political class must embrace good governance through prudent use of available resources, provision of critical infrastructures and social amenities, conduct of free and fair election, and the promotion of accountability, transparency and the rule of law.
