Abstract:
This study investigates how Information and Communication Technology (ICT) affects higher education institutions in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. The research employs a survey methodology, using structured questionnaires to gather data from students at three selected institutions: Imo State University (IMSU), Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), and Federal Polytechnic Nekede. Thirty respondents participated through random sampling techniques. Data analysis utilized a four-point Likert scale and mean score evaluation methods. The findings demonstrate that ICT has substantially improved students' academic experiences through enhanced information access, improved communication channels, and increased proficiency in digital tools. The study further shows that ICT strengthens information security and confidentiality while supporting knowledge distribution, ultimately contributing to national development. Nevertheless, significant obstacles were identified, including insufficient funding, inadequate ICT infrastructure, shortage of qualified personnel, and limited maintenance practices. These factors represent major barriers to effective ICT implementation in the studied institutions. The study concludes that although ICT serves a vital function in transforming the educational sector and preparing students for a knowledge-driven economy, its complete potential remains unrealized due to systemic constraints. The research recommends prioritizing increased investment, infrastructure improvements, and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen ICT integration in higher education institutions.
