Abstract:
This article examines the defense system and border policy of the Khanate of Khiva during the 16-20 th centuries from a historical-analytical perspective. The study analyzes the military-political structure of the khanate, the system of fortresses and fortifications, mechanisms for managing border territories, and relations with neighboring states, including the Bukhara Emirate, Kokand Khanate, Iran, and Kazakh and Turkmen tribes. Additionally, the article explores the penetration of the Russian Empire into the region and the political-military situation of the khanate following the Treaty of Gandamian of 1873. The study draws on archival sources, classical Eastern manuscripts, and contemporary historiography.
