Abstract:
The persistent challenges in mathematics education with relation to student engagement, conceptual understanding, and achievement underline the need for pedagogical practices that support active learning and teamwork. This systematic review looks at the opportunities and challenges of implementing cooperative learning in high school math classes. Nine qualitative studies published between 2020 and 2025 were analyzed using thematic analysis, following a rigorous search of reputable academic databases. Findings indicate four major opportunities of cooperative learning: (1) enhanced student engagement and participation; (2) deepened conceptual understanding; (3) development of interpersonal and communication skills; and (4) increased motivation and more positive attitudes toward mathematics. Despite its opportunities, this literature review also identified five challenges: (1) time constraints and instructional demands; (2) problems with group dynamics and unequal participation; (3) diversity in student ability levels; (4) teacher unpreparedness and lack of pedagogical skills; and (5) larger structural and institutional constraints. Fostering social synergy among learners requires more than just group work; it necessitates a reimagining of the teacher's role. For these dynamic environments to thrive, institutions must invest in the professional growth of their staff and the structural integrity of their curricula. According to the study's findings, cooperative learning can greatly enhance students' attitudes toward mathematics and their learning outcomes.
