Abstract:
This research investigates the relationship between language proficiency and mathematical word problem-solving comprehension among English as second Language (ESL) learners, particularly in the Philippines. The study employs a descriptive-correlational design, utilizing two survey questionnaires to assess student's language proficiency in mathematics vocabulary, reding comprehension, and language interpretation, alongside their problem-solving skills. Data 85 junior high school students at Paramount School of Arts, Languages, Management, and Sciences Inc. were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's R correlation coefficient. The findings indicate that students' language proficiency significantly influences their ability to comprehend and solve mathematical word problems. Higher proficiency in mathematics vocabulary and reading comprehension correlates positively with improved problem-solving skills. This research underscores the necessity for educators to integrate language instruction into mathematics education to enhance students' overall academic performance and confidence in mathematics.
