Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming higher education by enhancing teaching, learning, research, and administrative processes. Technologies such as machine learning, learning analytics, intelligent tutoring systems, and generative AI provide significant opportunities to improve educational quality, relevance, and accessibility while addressing the demands of the digital era. Despite these advancements, empirical evidence on the impact of AI adoption in higher education remains limited in developing countries, particularly Ethiopia. This study examined the effect of AI adoption on higher education outcomes in Ethiopian public universities, focusing on relevance, quality, and accessibility. A quantitative research design was employed, and data were collected from academic and administrative staff using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The findings reveal that AI adoption is widely perceived as enhancing curriculum modernization, student engagement, personalized learning, research productivity, and educational inclusiveness. Regression results indicate that AI adoption has a positive and statistically significant effect on the relevance of higher education (? = 0.220, p < 0.001) and accessibility (? = 0.151, p = 0.016). Although AI also demonstrated a positive effect on educational quality (? = 0.113), the relationship was only marginally significant (p = 0.074). Overall, the findings suggest that AI adoption has considerable potential to strengthen higher education outcomes, particularly by improving relevance and accessibility. The study recommends increased investment in digital infrastructure, institutional capacity building, faculty development, and supportive policy frameworks to accelerate the effective integration of AI across Ethiopian public universities.
