Abstract:
The increasing complexity of maritime operations has created a need for more secure, transparent, and efficient approaches to marine asset management. This study explored stakeholders' experiences of digital transformation in marine asset management through the transition from paper-based systems to blockchain technology at Dar es Salaam Port. The study adopted a qualitative research approach using a phenomenological research design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews involving 28 stakeholders. The findings revealed that stakeholders experienced both positive and challenging aspects during the transition to blockchain-enabled systems. Participants reported improvements in transparency, information sharing, efficiency, and record security, while also experiencing difficulties related to technical knowledge gaps, system integration, infrastructure limitations, and resistance to technological change. Stakeholders perceived blockchain as an important innovation for strengthening accountability and improving marine asset management practices, although successful adoption required adequate preparation and organizational support. The study contributes to understanding the practical experiences of blockchain adoption within Tanzania's maritime sector, where limited empirical evidence exists regarding stakeholder perspectives on blockchain-enabled marine asset management. The findings highlight the importance of considering both technological capabilities and stakeholder experiences when implementing digital transformation initiatives in port environments.
