Abstract:
The study examines students' perceptions of the selected textbook for emerging vocabulary in the Ibadan metropolis. A mixed-methods research design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, was adopted. The sample included 200 SS II students and 20 ESL teachers in public secondary schools within the Ibadan metropolis. A self-developed questionnaire (for students) and an interview guide (for teachers) were used for data collection. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while qualitative data were content analysed. Findings reveal that students have a positive perception of the selected textbooks for emerging vocabulary (Weighted Mean = 2.93; Threshold = 2.50), and that teachers' opinions about the textbooks differed. While some teachers affirmed the adequacy of the selected textbook for emerging vocabulary, others held a contrasting view. It was recommended that teachers be provided with supplementary materials specifically focused on emerging vocabulary. These could include online resources, curated word lists, or activities designed for independent learning. Also, there should be regular assessment of the effectiveness of the textbook and teaching strategies for emerging vocabulary.
