Abstract:
Borno state has been identified as one of the most vulnerable regions to climate change because of its location in semi-arid region of Nigeria. In response to the growing impacts of climate change the aim of this paper is to assessed the effects of climate change and strategies adopted by farmers' on food security in Borno state, with the following objectives; examine the Socio Economic characteristics of respondents, assess farmer's perception on climate change and its causes, determine the impact of climate change on crops and examine adaptation strategies adopted by farmers as a result of climate change. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select six local government areas from two out of three Agricultural zones in the state. A total of 436 structure questionnaires were administered to the respondent in the sampled communities. Data collected were presented and analysed using table of simple percentages and charts. Major findings of the study revealed that 87% of farmers were aware of climate change, on the impact on food security 38% perceived that reduced in crop yield as a result of climate change affects food security, 27% of the respondents attest to incidence of pest and diseases, Degradation of natural resources account for 23% and frequency of drought 12%. On the adaptation measures, using Planting sensitive varieties especially short-duration and drought-resistant crops, use of new crop variety tolerant to new climate regime and climate-sensitive varieties among others. The study recommends; localize early warning information to be made available to farmers, agricultural extension agents should intensify efforts to raise awareness and educate farmers about climate change. Stakeholders, financial institutions, government and non-governmental organization in the study area should provide credit facilities to farmers in the state.
