Abstract:
Pupils with special needs often exhibit conduct disorder which interfere with their activities in both the classroom and outside the classroom due to the difficulties in communication and self-regulation among others. Therefore, the study investigated the effects of emotional regulation intervention on conduct disorder among pupils with special needs in Ilorin metropolis. A quasi-experimental research design with the population comprised thirty-one (31) pupils with special needs in selected schools, while the entire population was used because the population size is small. The child behavior checklist was used as the research instrument for data collection with reliability coefficient of 0.75, two hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that there was a significant main effect in emotional regulation method on conduct disorder among pupils with special needs in Ilorin metropolis(p> 0.05). The study also revealed that there was no significant effect of emotional regulation method and gender on conduct disorder among pupils with special needs (p< 0.05). The study concluded that emotional regulation intervention is an effective behavioral management strategy for reducing conduct disorder among pupils with special needs. It was therefore recommended that teachers should be provided with regular in-service training and professional development programmed on emotional regulation strategies and positive behavior management techniques to enable them effectively manage pupils exhibiting conduct disorder.
