Abstract:
Aim - to examine systematically the hygienic factors - behavioural, environmental-occupational, socio-hygienic and physiological-metabolic - that participate in the formation of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among the population of Fergana city, and to set out the corresponding measures of primary prevention. Methods - the article is analytical and review-based, drawing on World Health Organization reports and clinical-classification guidelines, the regulatory acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan on non-communicable-disease prevention, the standard hygiene literature, and the design of an ongoing regional population survey. Results - four interacting groups of hygienic risk factors are distinguished; a two-branch pathway is proposed linking behavioural and environmental-occupational exposure, through metabolic disturbance, to clinical disease; internationally accepted diagnostic thresholds for arterial hypertension are presented; and the national prevalence of the principal modifiable risk factors is set out. Conclusion - a graded system of primordial, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, resting on routine screening, sustained health education and improvement of the living and working environment, offers the most realistic means of containing the region's growing non-communicable-disease burden.
