Abstract:
Improving household living standards is a major policy objective in Ethiopia, yet limited empirical evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of government interventions in enhancing household economic resilience. This study assessed the effectiveness of government policy interventions in improving household living standards in Addis Ababa. A quantitative cross-sectional explanatory research design was employed using primary data collected from 295 households through a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to assess household living standard adequacy and perceptions of government interventions, while binary and ordinal logistic regression models were proposed to examine the influence of policy interventions on households' ability to meet monthly expenses after controlling for socioeconomic characteristics. The findings revealed that 83.7% of respondents reported that their household income was insufficient to cover monthly expenses, and over 82% perceived the cost of living as high or very high. Respondents expressed relatively positive perceptions of housing, transport infrastructure, and job creation initiatives, whereas social welfare programs, food security interventions, and housing affordability measures were perceived as less effective. Overall, the study concludes that although government interventions have improved access to selected public services and economic opportunities, their effectiveness in strengthening household economic resilience remains constrained by rising living costs, affordability challenges, and implementation limitations. The study recommends strengthening targeted social protection, employment creation, housing affordability, price stabilization, and evidence-based policy implementation to improve household economic well-being in Addis Ababa.
