Abstract:
The increasing demand for electrical energy in residential, commercial, and industrial environments has highlighted the need for efficient energy management systems. However, most conventional power distribution tools, such as extension cables, lack the capability to monitor and control energy usage at the device level. This review paper critically examines existing technologies related to energy monitoring, smart plugs, embedded systems, and Internet of Things (IoT)-based power management solutions, with a focus on their applicability in low-cost and resource-constrained environments. Through the analysis of existing literature on current sensing technologies, voltage measurement systems, relay-based control mechanisms, and embedded microcontroller platforms, this study identifies key limitations, including lack of multi-device monitoring, high implementation costs, system fragmentation, and limited user interaction. The review reveals that although individual components of smart energy systems are well-developed, their integration into a single, affordable, and user-friendly extension platform remains insufficient. In response to these challenges, this paper proposes a conceptual framework for a Smart Power and Energy Monitoring, which integrates real-time power measurement, individual socket control, and safety mechanisms within a single embedded system. The proposed system aims to enhance energy efficiency, improve user awareness, and reduce electrical hazards. The paper concludes with recommendations for future research and development, emphasizing the need for scalable, low-cost, and intelligent energy management solutions.
