Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most disruptive technologies influencing the evolution of Information Systems (IS) across industries. Organizations increasingly rely on AI-enabled systems to improve operational efficiency, automate business processes, enhance decision-making, and create intelligent customer experiences. Despite rapid technological progress, organizations continue to face significant challenges related to data governance, cybersecurity, ethical AI deployment, transparency, workforce adaptation, and regulatory compliance. This study presents a comprehensive review of AI integration within modern Information Systems by synthesizing recent academic contributions and proposing an updated conceptual framework for AI-enabled digital transformation. A systematic literature review methodology was adopted to examine recent peer-reviewed publications focusing on AI applications in business information systems, healthcare, education, finance, manufacturing, and public administration. The study identifies major technological developments including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, generative AI, intelligent automation, edge AI, and explainable AI. Furthermore, the research categorizes organizational challenges into technological, ethical, managerial, and strategic dimensions while examining their influence on digital transformation initiatives. To strengthen the analytical perspective, a conceptual AI adoption framework is proposed that integrates organizational readiness, technological capability, governance mechanisms, and innovation outcomes. The study also introduces a comparative analysis of AI maturity across industrial sectors and discusses emerging opportunities associated with responsible AI, sustainable computing, human-AI collaboration, and intelligent decision support systems. The findings indicate that successful AI implementation requires more than technological investment; organizational culture, employee competencies, data quality, regulatory preparedness, and ethical governance significantly determine long-term success. The paper concludes by identifying future research directions focusing on explainable AI, trustworthy AI ecosystems, AI governance frameworks, and intelligent information systems capable of supporting sustainable organizational growth.
