Abstract:
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015, provide a universal framework for addressing interconnected economic, social and environmental challenges by 2030. Universities occupy a strategically important position within this agenda because they generate knowledge, educate future professionals and leaders, develop innovations, influence public policy, manage substantial institutional resources, and engage with communities. This article examines the role of universities in advancing the SDGs through education, research and innovation, institutional governance and operations, community engagement, policy leadership, and national and international partnerships. The article adopts an integrative literature review approach, drawing on peer-reviewed studies, systematic and scoping reviews, and authoritative United Nations and UNESCO documents published principally from 2015 to 2026. The analysis indicates that universities contribute to sustainable development through five mutually reinforcing pathways: sustainability-oriented teaching and learning; SDG-focused research and innovation; sustainable institutional governance and campus operations; community engagement and the university's third mission; and strategic partnerships and policy leadership. However, implementation remains constrained by inadequate funding, weak institutional coordination, limited interdisciplinary collaboration, resistance to organisational change, insufficient sustainability competencies, weak monitoring systems, and inequalities in global knowledge production. These challenges are particularly significant in developing-country and African higher education systems where financial and infrastructural constraints can limit the institutionalisation of sustainability. The article argues that universities should move beyond symbolic SDG branding towards whole-institution approaches in which sustainability is embedded in institutional strategy, curricula, research priorities, budgeting, procurement, infrastructure, staff development, community engagement and performance assessment. The article concludes that universities can function as catalysts of sustainable transformation when their core missions are deliberately aligned with the 2030 Agenda and when universities work collaboratively with governments, industry, civil society and communities.
