Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of AI-mediated mental health communication on emotional well-being among young adults: a study of Lead City University, Ibadan. The study seeks to examine the extent to which young adults use AI-based mental health application, the perceived usefulness of AI-based mental health applications in supporting the emotional well-being of young adults and the challenges associated with the use of AI-based mental health applications among young adults in Lead City University, Ibadan. The population of the study comprises students of the Lead City University, Ibadan. The study adopted a survey research design, and a sample of 150 respondents was selected for the study using Taro Yamane, a sample-size determination method, while the Technology Acceptance Model was adopted. The study used a research questionnaire for data collection and a purposive sampling method was used as sampling method. The data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Findings of the study revealed that AI applications such as ChatGPT can be used by students to express personal concerns and receive conversational support, AI applications such as ChatGPT, mental health chatbots and AI wellness apps are useful for helping students reflect on their emotions and personal concerns. The results also showed that some of the challenges associated with the use of AI-based mental health applications among young adults include inaccurate or inappropriate information when using ChatGPT and other AI applications for mental health-related concerns, inability of AI applications to fully understand students' emotions and personal circumstances. The study recommended the need to develop strong regulatory structures to be in place to guarantee model validation and transparency, while ongoing research and development should be funded to enhance its use in mental health.
