Abstract:
This research investigated the influence of self-regulation and academic motivation on the academic performance of senior secondary Economics students in Awka South L.G.A. Utilizing a descriptive correlational research design, the study focused on a population of 1,533 senior secondary two (SS2) students studying Economics across 19 public schools in the region. The sample size was determined using the Yamane formula, resulting in the random selection of 317 participants. Data were gathered through a structured questionnaire designed to evaluate levels of self-regulation, academic motivation, and academic performance. Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient was utilized to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between self-regulation and academic performance in Economics students (r = 0.407, p < 0.001). Additionally, academic motivation also exhibited a significant positive influence on performance (r = 0.612, p < 0.001). These results indicate that students with high levels of self-regulation and motivation are more likely to achieve better academic outcomes. In light of these findings, the study recommends that Economics teachers in Awka South L.G.A. implement targeted self-regulation training programs to help students develop effective study habits and time management skills, ultimately enhancing their academic performance.
