Abstract:
This study explores the dynamics and practice of discernment in living the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience in contemporary Ugandan society. It examines how consecrated persons sustain their vocation amid social, cultural, and economic changes shaped by globalization, individualism, and technological advancement. Using a qualitative theological approach, the study draws on interviews and documentary analysis within selected religious communities in Uganda. Findings indicate that faith and hope are central to vocational fidelity, while discernment functions as an ongoing personal and communal process involving prayer, listening to God, reflection, and community dialogue. Divine inspiration is experienced in daily life and guides decision-making, mission, and resilience. Community tensions are also viewed as opportunities for growth through deeper discernment. The study concludes that discernment is the key integrating principle that enables authentic living of the evangelical counsels in Uganda. It sustains consecrated persons in remaining faithful, mission-oriented, and prophetic within a rapidly changing society.
